Summertime Saga on iPhone: the IPA, and Which Version You Get
Summertime Saga is one of the biggest adult games there is, and one of the few you cannot get on an iPhone the normal way. DarkCookie’s Kompas Productions has built it since its first public release on Patreon in August 2016, and by October 2017 it had become the most-funded game on the platform — past $74,000 a month from more than 29,000 patrons by 2021.
The official downloads cover Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. There is no iOS version, and there will not be one on the App Store. On iPhone, the game comes as an IPA.

What the game is
Summertime Saga is a visual novel with RPG systems and a dating-sim structure, built in Ren’Py. You play a young man in a small suburban town whose father has died in suspicious circumstances — and who learns, soon after, that his father owed money to a group of criminals. The mystery around the death and the debt is the spine of the story; everything else hangs off the town around it.
And there is a lot hanging off it: more than 65 characters, over 30 locations and more than 20 mini-games, with individual storylines that open up as you work your way through the town. It plays slowly by design — a day-and-time system, jobs, stats and errands — and the adult scenes are part of those character routes rather than the whole game.
Why it is not on the App Store
Apple’s review guidelines reject overtly sexual or pornographic material outright, so a game built around adult storylines cannot be approved no matter how it is packaged. That is a policy wall, not a technical one: the Ren’Py engine runs on iPhone, and the game runs fine once it is installed. The only thing missing is a way through the store.
Which version you get
Version numbers are the confusing part of Summertime Saga, so it is worth being precise.
- 0.20.16 is the last stable public release in the old numbering.
- 21.0.0 is the big technical rebuild DarkCookie has been working on, released in stages as “wip” — work-in-progress — preview builds. The newest preview on the developer’s side is 21.0.0-wip.7722 from June 2026.
- The catalog build is 21.0.0-wip.5252, a preview of that rebuild from June 2025.
In practice that means you are playing the rebuilt 21.0.0 version rather than the old 0.20 line, but not the very latest preview. Expect the rough edges that come with a preview build, and do not expect story content added to later previews.
Keeping it installed
A visual novel this long is a game you come back to over weeks, which is exactly where most free sideloading falls down: an IPA signed with a free Apple ID stops opening after seven days, and a game that will not launch is a save you cannot reach. Installing from a maintained catalog keeps it signed without a weekly refresh — why the seven-day limit exists.

You register your iPhone once with its UDID in the browser. The first time you add a device, Apple runs a one-time “processing” step: most devices are ready within a day, and some take up to three. After that, installs are immediate.
