What is Day One?

Day One is a journaling app from Bloom Built Inc, filed in the App Store under Health & Fitness. It has been around since February 2016, which makes it one of the longer-running diary apps on iPhone, and it has also been recognized by Apple. The pitch is a private place to record your life as it happens, not a social feed.

An entry can hold text with markdown-style formatting, photos, video and voice notes, and the app can transcribe spoken recordings. Metadata is added for you: time, date, weather and moon phase are attached automatically, and a map view shows where you wrote. You can keep several journals at once, for example one for travel and one for work, and use tags, favorites and search filters to find something months later.

Habit-building is built in. Reminders can arrive as notifications, daily prompts help when the page feels empty, templates add structure, and streaks plus a calendar view show how consistent you have been. The On This Day feature resurfaces what you wrote on the same date in past years. Privacy is the other pillar: entries are protected by end-to-end encryption, and the app can lock behind a passcode, Touch ID or Face ID. Exports to formats such as PDF and plain text keep your entries portable.

Version and requirements

The changelog for this build says the subscription is unlocked in the updated IPA for iPhone. The App Store version of Day One is free to download and requires iOS 18.0 or newer. Recent release notes mention signing in with a Google account, fixes for a journal that kept re-syncing on iOS 18, a crash fix during entry sync, and a note that the Apple Watch app now needs a Series 4 or newer.
