What is ByePhotos?

The App Store lists the app as ByePhotos - Free Up Storage under Utilities. The publisher there is 尉卿 褚, and the app has been available since December 2024. Its promise is to help you organise photos and videos and recover space without a marathon cleanup session.

The first selling point is privacy. All processing happens locally on the phone and no internet connection is needed, so your pictures are never sent anywhere to be analysed. On that foundation the app detects similar and duplicate photos by itself and suggests which version is the best one to keep. Video files can be compressed to smaller sizes while keeping the picture clear enough that you do not notice a drop in quality.

Sorting works by gesture: you swipe through the library, mark unwanted shots for deletion and move on. Four modes decide the order, namely random, by month, oldest first and newest first, and the app shows real-time progress. You can pause at any point and resume later, because it remembers where you stopped, so a few minutes a day is enough. Photos, videos and Live Photos are all supported.

Version and requirements

The original app sells annual and monthly memberships, and this build comes with the subscription unlocked, as the changelog states. The App Store version requires iOS 17.0 or newer and is rated 4+. Its newest notes describe gesture sorting improvements: albums can be dragged onto folders, a setting shows full album names, the gallery can show two, three or four photos per row, and a long press previews the neighbouring photos.
