What is StudyCards?

StudyCards is a flashcard app from the developer Cameron Shemilt, listed under Education and Productivity and first released in October 2020. It uses spaced repetition, which means cards come back just before you would forget them, and the algorithm can be adjusted to your preferences instead of being fixed.

You write the material yourself. Cards support Markdown formatting and images, and with an Apple Pencil you can sketch straight on a card. To keep things tidy, content is organised into Courses, Chapters and Questions, so the structure of the deck can follow a school syllabus or a self-made study plan. Cards can be imported and exported, which makes it easy to pass a deck to a classmate.

Day to day, the app tries to keep you coming back. Swipe controls let you move through the stack quickly, a daily streak tracks consistency, more than twenty achievements can be unlocked, and a statistics page shows study habits and improvement. The app works across iPhone, iPad and Mac with automatic syncing, needs no account or sign-up, and lets you pick from several app icons in Settings.

What the StudyCards tweak unlocks

  • Subscription features unlocked without paying for them
  • Unlimited flashcards, which the store describes as the paid upgrade
  • Courses, Chapters and Questions for structuring bigger subjects
  • Full study statistics, streaks and achievements
  • Markdown and image support for richer cards

Version and requirements

The App Store describes StudyCards as free to try, with a small one-time purchase that lifts the limit on flashcards, and this build opens that access. The latest notes list bug fixes: exporting logs on Mac, saving an edited flashcard, showing streak achievements after a reset, and a sidebar crash. The app requires iOS 16.1 or later and has a 4+ rating.
