About HeyJapan

The App Store name is Learn Japanese - HeyJapan, the developer is Linh Nguyen, and the category is Education. The method starts from your interests, whether that is anime, travel, food or just the wish to speak, and is built around about fifteen minutes of study a day. The pitch is that you begin speaking in the first week instead of memorising for months in silence.

The learning path covers the writing systems first. Hiragana and Katakana are taught with spaced repetition, recorded native pronunciation and demo clips, and stroke-order practice teaches you to write each character correctly. Vocabulary is split by topic, with more than 1,500 words, each with example sentences, images and audio, and a smart review system that schedules repeats. Kanji is taught by meaning and reading, while grammar is cut into short lessons with brief explanations.

The standout is dubbing: you record your voice over anime scenes and get a score and pronunciation feedback straight away. You can also build lessons around topics of your own. The streak system recently got a playful twist, with a cherry tree that grows taller as you study every day and collect water drops.
