What is Botanicula?
Botanicula is an adventure game from the Czech studio Amanita Design s.r.o., the team behind Machinarium and the Samorost series. Its music comes from the Czech band DVA. In the App Store it sits under Games with Family and Adventure tags.
The story is simple and told without long speeches. Five friends, who are little creatures living in a tree, set out to rescue the last seed of their home. Evil parasites have infested the tree, and the journey takes the group through its branches and the odd places that grow on them.
Its look and sound are the main draw. The world is hand-drawn, the soundtrack was written by the band DVA and has an award for audio on its résumé, and the developer says the game suits gamers, their partners, families and seniors alike, so it works as a title to share on the couch.
The pace is deliberately relaxed. There is no timer and no pressure, which is why the developer pitches it equally to veteran gamers, to their partners, to families and to seniors. You click around the screen to find out what each creature, plant or insect does, trigger funny reactions and uncover hidden extras that are easy to miss.
